My View on Stereotypes…A butch perspective

my-view-on-stereotypesa-butch-perspective

When I walk into my favorite lesbian watering hole I automatically feel as if I am on some kind of platform being judged. I get numerous looks from numerous people. They all have to assume that position of stereotyping everyone who comes in and arranging them in their own little “groups”.

Generally speaking, most lesbians and gay men consider me “butch”. I have a shorter hairstyle that requires little primping to make it look suitable. I am seen mostly in jeans and tee shirts or dressy boyish shirts. I rarely ever wear dresses or skirts. I don’t usually don any make-up but I do wear cologne (usually men’s) and I do have a wallet with a chain slung around my right hip. Occasionally I even put on a baseball cap or a cool Kangol hat to hide my unkempt hair.

The normal response from women who don’t know me is “oh, its another butch” but from my friends its “hey, how you doing?” Typically, my friends are done putting me into a category and are not stereotyping me any longer. I hang around all types of women from drop dead gorgeous to ones that could even be mistaken for men.

I am not big into stereotyping other women myself. I do not view them entirely as “butch” or “femme”. I don’t see them as boyish or girlish. I look at the people who I meet as interesting or dull people. You may say I look past the looks and right to the heart of their personality. I can’t deny that when a gorgeous girl walks in I drool. Hey, we are all only human!

I do realize that other people do stereotype and categorize people and I can’t say that I do not blame them but I myself try not to. I don’t hate people for calling me “butch” but if they really got to know me they would probably have never called me this. I am a very romantic, funny, down to earth but practical person and I enjoy just as many similar things as any other gay person would. I just wish that others would realize that you don’t have to be a pretty, sassy, girly haired girl with a skirt and stiletto’s to be a lesbian.

Lesbian Quotes

John Kerry didn’t out me, nor did he offend or attack me by calling me a lesbian. I certainly couldn’t be offended by the truth. — Mary Cheney
