The Love of My Life

the-love-of-my-life

It started as a given. Certainly I would have one. The debate happened on how and where and with whom I’d get my love.

Finally after starts and stops and waiting and hand wringing she came to me.

Beautiful eyes and slick black hair. The cleft in her chin is what I noticed first. Soon within minutes she was in my arms. I made sweet noises in her ears and held her close. I kept her close until she was forced from my arms an hour later. Together we traveled down winding halls and between floors. My heart broke the first time there was a wall between us. I watch through glass as others interfered with our lives.

That day my heart grew more than I thought possible. Every day for a year I held her as much as my arms an her will would allow me.

Somehow, with strength unknown to me and a deep understanding everyone’s life would be better, I gave up half her life.

You see me and her other mom split when she turned one. She’ll be four next month and I’m still astonished at how I love that little bundle. I have her 14 to 16 days a month. Fifty percent of her life is shared with me.

She is absolutely the love of my life.
