Hurricane Katrina
I’m sure all of us has heard at least one heartbreaking, sad encounter from the results of the hurricane in New Orleans. I must admit following the news even before the hurricane hit I never imagined so much pain, suffering , and destruction. Even worst to comprehend is that the media predicted much of these destructions, predictions of whole cities being overtaken by the water, to which homes and building would collapse depending on what they were constructed with. I ask why? Why didn’t our government prepare a plan and were ready and waiting to move in right after Katrian hit? Why wait and watch people suffer and dyeing, why wait two days after to begin emergency evacuations? I personally didn’t know anyone from New Orleans or have any family from there. Nevertheless my heart breaks to see all the suffering that has taken place. I sit and think about these people still stranded on rooftops, what they must be thinking of our country, our government? We live in one of the most powerful counties in the world, we have sent 8 billions dollars to Iraq and our solders to help, were we were better organized to assist third world countries than we were in helping our own Americans here in America.
I live in Texas and work for Company building seats for the General Motors Assembly Plant in Arlington. I am one of the Union Representatives for our UAW members at our plant. I have come to find our that a great deal of the employees were born and or raised in New Orleans and have some or all of there family members still living there. One of the employees has informed us that two nights ago 9 of his family members showed up at his house in the middle of the night. They mostly walked or hitchhiked all the way from New Orleans, telling us how when he opened his door there they stood with only the clothes they had on some bare foot. They were scared, exhausted, hungry, and tired. Tears came to my eyes listening to his story and the look of hurt that you could plainly see from his eyes. Another employee had 12 show up at her door, one had 18 family members show up at his door, and many more who still of not heard from family members.
We are raising money by donations, are planning a car wash this Saturday all money made will go to our union brothers and sisters to help them support there families. We have also placed big cardboard boxes thought the plant for people to bring clothes, toothbrushes, blankets and any others they would like to donate. To see what is happening to the people in New Orleans and Louisiana, a very distributing and sad thing. I have been following what has been happening daily and it is very depressing, I hear some people say ” I don’t watch the news or want to hear what is happening over there” I ask WHY? Is to ignore it or block it out of your mind make it feel like this is not really going on? When anything devastating happens to anyone in the world, I think how it would make me feel if it was happening to me or my family. Would I want the world to not watch the news or block it out of their mind because it’s to sad to take in. Where would we be today if everyone felt and did that.
We take for granite what God has given us, we have petty things to complain about like what I’m I going to wear today, or theres nothing to watch on T.V., or where do we want to eat out at. I give thanks to God for what he has given me and my family and will always try to help that person in need if I can. Can you honestly say you do?
LETS KEEP ALL THE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY HURRICANE KATRINA IN OUR PRAYERS AND THOUGHTS
