3. What is one of the best or worst "lessons" you’ve learned in life?

“A belief is simply a theory that has not been questioned in a while.”
This does not mean that beliefs themselves are ‘bad’ just that they need to be pulled out of their deep beds and re-evaluated from time to time. It means that in order to learn you must question yourself.

The first most valuable ‘lesson’ I ever learnt is that change is growth and growth is vital to happiness.
At least for me. The second most valuable lesson I learnt was to question everything. To always get a second opinion, always verify the references. Find out what makes up the ‘facts’, the theories and the conjecture of the information presented to me.
In essence: To formulate opinions that are based in solid, verifiable information, to listen to my self as well as everyone else. To gather all available information and then to differentiate between facts, theories and beliefs before evaluating it.
I don’t know if I’ve ever come across a ‘bad’ lesson as any is better then none, however the most frustrating one that I have learnt recently is that the reason that I can not comprehend the thought process behind some people’s opinions is that there often isn’t one. Some people seem to build opinions from ignorance, superstition, misinformation and emotion – usually fear. I have not however, learnt how to handle these ‘opinions’ yet. As rational discussion does not seem to penetrate the layers of prejudice.

My incomprehension of such stubborn ignorance may be why I am as yet unable to learn the childhood lesson that “everyone one is equal, everyone is good.” As I am yet to see the evidence.

These thoughts go hand in hand, for to question is to demand change within my self. It demands that I question where another is coming from before judging them. It demands that I question my own theories and opinions to ensure that they are constantly updated with new information, that they are not driven by the misinformation, ignorance or fear that I despise. It demands that I am true to my self. That I grow in my abilities and understanding. It demands I strive for understanding.

For I think that the only way to stop hate is to understand the fear that drives it.
