#Booorn Gay…

booorn-gay

#…as gay as the grass grows….as gay as the wiiiind blooowwss…#

Apologies, my instinct is to turn everything into a song. Perhaps it’s part of my ‘Gay Gene’.

Is anyone born gay? Can we look at babies in the womb and see their homosexual tendencies? An if it is something we’re ‘born with’, does that mean someone can give us a pill and make us all better? Or is gay better?

When I was little, I was fascinated by girls. And women. I idolised teachers as a kid, as I became a teenager I idolised girls who were in the older classes at school and thought how cool they were. I didn’t notice boys, I just knew that I was becoming obsessed by these particular girls and that whenever they walked into the room I knew eveything was going to be alright. All my friends were talking about which boys they were going to try and get off with (translation for you non-England types: I think you call it necking?) whereas I would be perfectly content if these girls I was so infatiated with just sat down and talked to me and thought I was a cool person.

I was always going to grow up to like women. But, was I born that way. Well, I think I probably was. Allow me to explain:

This culture is heteronormative. That is, when you meet someone on the street you’ve never met before, your default reasoning on their sexuality will be that they are heterosexual, unless they tell you otherwise of they are displaying their sexuality in a certain way. Everyone who is born is born ‘normal’, born heterosexual, becuase this is a heteronormative society. Therefore if someone is born gay it is seen to be being born ‘abnormal’ (although it’s now socially taboo to suggest that being gay isn’t normal, if our society things that heterosexuality is normal then gay will always be ‘other’). It’s like saying that if you’re born with two legs you’re normal, if you’re born with one you’re not. If you’re born fully sighted you’re normal, if you’re born blind you’re not. You get my drift.

So, how about we change our views a little? Babies are born black, white, yellow, orange, with one leg or two, deaf, blind, both, unable to walk and able to walk (although not *straight* from the womb, clearly!). So they come in all shapes and sizes. So what’s to say that babies can’t be born heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, asexual…it wouldn’t seem unreasonable. If we (we=society in general) stop seeing heterosexual as ‘normal’ and any other sexuality as ‘other’, it’s not so unfeesable that people can be born gay. Or bi. Or straight. Or whatever!
