Growing Old and Gay—Revisited

growing-old-and-gay-revisited

Back in May, I wrote an entry about my friends Jane, Sophie, Mary and Emma. I spoke of Emma and how she tended to the love of her life, Mary as she battled Cancer. After Mary passed, Mary’s daughters would not even allow Emma to have her things from the house. It was a dirty deal, though one that unfortunately happens every day of our lives. I loved getting to know Emma…what a beautiful soul.

I saw Emma Memorial Day weekend. She was in the hospital battling some unknown disorder. She was supposed to be out of the hospital a few days later. She was, but then had trouble breathing, so back in she went. Suddenly, she became worse. It was discovered she had something called Respiratory Thrombosis and the disease had progressed 50 years in 1 month. In June, Emma passed away. It has really made me believe that time is of the essence in our everyday lives, that we too often take for granted. It makes me angry at Mary’s daughters for making Emma’s life hell. All that should have been important was Emma’s love for Mary and that their mother had found something they will probably never know. I don’t think Emma ever found another soul to love like Mary, but she had so many wonderful friends that were in her life, loving her, respecting her for the person she was and continues to be somewhere out there.
It’s also prompted me to revise my will after so many years…doing it now and not putting it off. Death brings out the worst in people, especially when there is money or property in question. How sad that is when we should focus on the life of the person we’ve lost. Emma will never be far from my thoughts every day.
