Goldstar Review: Big Dreams In Little Hope
Please note: BIG DREAMS IN LITTLE HOPE was previously titled MOM on the film festival circuit.
Coming to DVD on May 29th, 2007
BIG DREAMS IN LITTLE HOPE is a smart new comedy in the form of a classic road movie with a lesbian twist. Kelly (Emily Burton, Out at the Wedding) is a market researcher with aspirations to be a television news reporter. She’s shipped off to Little Hope to gather data for her job, accompanied by Linda (Julie Goldman, Logo’s “The Big Gay Sketch Show”), her talkative cameraperson.
The hilarity begins when the local hotel runs out of rooms and this mismatched pair must bunk at a youth hostel. Linda fits right in, but Kelly’s not happy – particularly when Linda hooks up with her now straight and married former flame (Emma Bowers). Finally, Linda complicates matters by suggesting that they showcase their talents by filming a human interest piece at the local annual Chili Cook-Off.Full of warmth and humor, Erin Greenwell’s odd couple buddy movie is a unique tale of friendship, self-acceptance and hope.
Despite the low rating of this film I would like to say that Julie Goldman (Linda) had me LOLing on several occasions. Since I have been reviewing many independent films the poor acting is something I have been getting used to. Julie’s acting was almost too good for this film. Her comedic timing was what kept my eyes open through the film.
They dub this a buddy movie. I’m not really sure it’s a “lesbian” movie. It’s more like an “every one’s life is fucked up so don’t feel bad” movie. And as far as I’m concerned we can’t have enough of those hanging out on the shelves at Blockbuster. I guess what I’m saying is that if you’re looking for a good lesbian themed flick this may not be the movie. It’s filled with several cliche’s, but that too, is what makes it a not so good lesbian movie.
I wouldn’t watch it again, but I did laugh. I hope to see more of Julie Goldman in films because I thought she did a fine job in this one. I know I am a bit hard on these movies, and the truth is I’m really not sure what would get a film 4 stars. If you watch this movie leave me your thoughts. The DVD release date is May 29th and you can purchase it here!
