The Urge to Merge
The urge to merge…my girlfriend and I have been considering this topic for a few weeks. We met in November and we’re engaged and will be moving in together in August. We know we moved rather quickly. We’re still in new relationship bliss because we don’t see each other more often that every 2-3 weeks…sometimes longer. But I don’t see us merging. We have distinct interests. I love to write stories, erotica and fantasy (vampires). I also am a member of a vampire based Role-Playing forum (she calls it “nerdy shit”). I prefer cats, she prefers dogs (but we both love all animals). I love fish–right now I have a 5 gallon aquarium with several small fish in it and hope to, in the near future to get a larger tank and a few more fish. I tend to roll with the flow, she likes to plan things, big things at least. I’m indecisive and she isn’t.
Like Grumpy Granny wrote, we were raised in two totally different environments. Cultural references I use aren’t always funny to her because she hasn’t seen the movie or heard the song. She’s 2 1/2 years younger than me. When she says stuff like “8th grade was 6 years ago” I cringe a little because it was 9 years ago for me. She’s never seen Napoleon Dynamite, Anchorman, Team America and a lot of other recent movies that I love. She’s also never seen a lot of the movies I saw growing up (but I’m introducing her to them…slowly).
Our differences aren’t huge. We don’t fight. I think we balance each other out. She obsesses about things like moving, buying furniture, etc. and it stresses her out. I’m here to calm her down a little and distract her from obsessing so much. When I’m acting out of character, either slightly depressed or a little manic, she calls my attention to it and I can start trying corrective measures. I think we mesh well, but we’re still individuals. We have our own friends, our own experiences, hobbies, likes and dislikes. But we still have a lot in common. I feel like she’s the yin to my yang.

wow…this sounds exactly like me & my gf. good luck with the move and congrats on the engagement.
