My First Lesbian Wedding

I’ve never been big on weddings. In my 29 years of life I have only been to a total of three. Maybe it’s because I never have anything to wear. It could be because I tend to shy away from large groups of people. Or maybe it’s just because I never really understood how much they could mean to me.

This past Friday I stood up in my friends Jessica and Casey’s wedding. The wedding was perfect. A total of 40 of their closest friends gathered at the Rooster Tail on the Detroit River. It never really occurred to me that it was a “lesbian wedding” until the straight people who were there started to talk about it. Casey’s boss asked if any drag queens would be there. My brother said the guys at his work were asking him a bunch of questions in regards to what the wedding would be like. I assume it was close to the same line of questions that surround how two women can have sex. To me, it was just two people that I care about dearly sharing their love with their family and friends.

A friend of mine asked me if I will ever marry. I had to think about it for a while and realized I hadn’t really an opinion on it. At that point I wasn’t really for or against it. After seeing how happy Jess and Casey were, and sharing their wedding with them, I now have to admit that I am entirely for gay marriage. (Let me interject here and say I was never against it. I simply didn’t have a strong opinion on whether or not I would need it to define the love I had for another woman.) Friday wasn’t about the rights that Jess or Casey will or will not get. It wasn’t about a piece of paper or a political agenda. It was about two amazing people in love. In my toast before dinner I told the room that some times two people find a love that the rest of us can learn from. If and when that love is found it should be celebrated over and over again, gay or straight.
