Rosie O’Bloody Hell (a Tina-cious rebuttal)
| Hot: |
This post is written mostly in response to: Rosie, a paradigm of Ellen’s legacy (the entry before mine) – why? Because this was too damn long to be a comment.
Why else? I was bored.
Anyway, here are my thoughts on Ellen:
I don’t believe that her show was cancelled (at least not entirely) because she came out as a lesbian. I think it was cancelled because from “that kiss” forward the show began to SUCK. Big time.
What was once a really hysterical show became “gay this” and “gay that”… every. single. episode was about Ellen and her lesbianism.
Hell, I’m a lesbian and I was sick of hearing about it. Where was the balance?? I think that the leap that Ellen took threw her off-balance from that point forward on that show and we all felt it. Though we wanted to support our out celebrity “family” members, let’s not kid ourselves that that show had the same punch “pre-kiss”.
She has, however, found her balance again and is wicked funny on her talk show and I’m glad to see the old Ellen back.
As for Rosie… well,
I don’t condemn her for talking about her family. In fact, I’m glad she talks about them freely — though I wished she’d stop plugging R Family Vacation every 38 seconds — she’s starting to act like a used car salesman!
But I digress…
Being very out there in her homosexuality is great for our collective visibility. HOWEVER — couple that with idiotic comments and accusations (ex. outting Clay Aiken, ripping Kelly Rippa a new one, the whole Trump fiasco, etc) that she hurls whenever the whim strikes her what’s that doing for our visibility?
I’ll tell ya what.
Lesbian = Pompous, Irritating, Loud-Mouth, Know-It-All Idiot.
Is that a fair assumption? Hell no. We don’t judge all straight people by what their celebrities do.
BUT when you’re talking about a small group, unfortunately, the high profiles of that group will become a representative of the entire group to many people — fair or not.
I mean, look what Osama did for the muslim community.
My point (and I do have one – HA! Did ya catch the Ellen reference there??? — woot! woot! I’m good :::slap on the back::::)
Er, ehem… my point is that even though Rosie is doing what all other gay celebrities should be doing, her behavior does nothing to help our collective image.
Why not use all that fame to stand and fight for worthy causes and not just picking petty fights with insignficant talk show hosts and decaying, hairstyle-challenged billionaires?

Well, that wasn’t exactly a rebuttal, except for the last paragraph. And, I agree with you on everything you said except the part about Rosie being a bad representative for the gay community. I believe there are far worse examples, like those who participate in the LA gay pride parade. Rosie may be loud and obnoxious, and I don’t agree with everything she says, but at least, in my estimation, she is not a freak.
