Goldstar Review: Looking for Cheyenne
Ok, I need to start this review by admitting that I’m not a fan of subtitles. Call me a lazy American if you will, but they just tend to drive me crazy and take something away from the film for me. So if the folks from here! are reading this, no more subtitles for this dyke please. Now that I’ve got that out of my system let me share with you a little bit about this film.
It has subtitles! So unless you speak French be prepared to have your glasses handy. (Sorry, just needed to get one last rant out)
YEAR: 2007
DIRECTOR:Valérie Minetto
CLOSED CAPTIONING: Subtitled (This was there all by itself, I had nothing to do with it!)
LANGUAGES: French
STARRING:
Mila Dekker
Aurélia Petit
Cheyenne, a young unemployed journalist whose welfare payments are about to be cut off, decides to leave Paris to live a marginal life in the country. She leaves behind Sonia, the woman she loves. Sonia is a physics and chemistry teacher at a Parisian high school. She tries her best to forget Cheyenne, but it’s not easy.
How do we reconcile what we want with what we’re actually able to do, what we think and how we act? How do we cope with a person we love and yet have to refuse? “Looking for Cheyenne” is a contemporary fable about the precarious states created by modern society, the need for change, and the power of love.
So I have to be honest here. Even if the film wasn’t subtitled I don’t think I would have liked it. Which in and of itself surprised me because I’ve always been one for “true love conquers all” stories, fables, or whatever you would like to call them. However if you do rent or purchase this film be sure to check out the character named Beatrice and let me know what in the Sam Hell is going on with her hair! She is like Sandra Bernhard meets Joe Pesci. She’s really rather creepy.
One of the positives of this film was the telepathic dialog. Something you have to see to understand. It’s definitely a movie about lesbians, but one of them does sleep with a man. I have decided I want to add the word “Bloke” to my vocabulary however. Would I recommend the film? No. I actually feel like I lost a few hours out of my life. But we’re all different, so if the music moves you feel free to pick this one up.
