Supporting Same-Sex Marriage in California
| Hot: |
If you’re like me (and I’m pretty sure you are because you’re reading The Lesbian Lifestyle after all), you were inexplicably overjoyed by the news on May 15th. The ban on same-sex marriage in California was overturned by our wonderful Supreme Court.
And if you’re like me, upon hearing this incredible news, you went researching on the internet for anything pertaining to this new law; when it takes place, how it came to be, who voted for it, what it means, who’s opposing it, etc. etc. etc. Whether or not you were on the forefront of this issue since who-knows-when, you immediately forced yourself into the middle of it last week, becoming as active as you could to get all the information you want and to ensure this new decision would solidify the equal rights for all in our LGBT community.
And if you’re like me, you grew increasingly angry, pessimistic and bitter upon realizing just how many fundamentalist zealots there were out there, pressing their noses into your personal lives, attempting to prevent you from everything you deserve as a human being and as an American citizen. You probably wondered why such people cared so much about who you love and why you want to spend your life with them. You probably asked yourself how it’s possible for these people to have so much control over your future; how a group of angry, unfortunate, ignorant bigots could have the power to overturn legislature.
You probably also wondered why such people existed.
If you’re like me, you’re probably up to your eyes in gay marriage issues by now. From CNN to The Ellen DeGeneres show to The Lesbian Lifestyle itself, the issue is everywhere, and now Californians are beginning to look like a herd of dogs chasing their tails. You might even be getting a little discouraged with it all, since those same religious zealots are now asking the Supreme Court to hold the effective date of their decision until after the November election, making it impossible for any gay couples to get married until then.
But if you’re like me, you can’t let them win over your life.
Not all of us can be at the Capitol, letting our voices be heard in the courts or on TV. But we can do something.
Governor Arnold Schwartzenegger is getting massive amounts of phone calls from supporters of “Limits on Marriage” – the constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. He’s already said he will not support such an amendment. We don’t want him to go back on his word.
Take 30 seconds to call the governor’s office (automated system) at (916)445-2841. All you have to do to vote supporting the Supreme Court’s decision is press 1-5-1-1.
This isn’t about politics, it isn’t about faith. It isn’t about one side winning and the other side losing. It’s about the most important decision since the Civil Rights Movement, and the opportunity to make a change for the well-being of your community.
If you’re at all like me, you want the legal right to marry the love of your life without having to move halfway across the globe.
We greatly appreciate each and every person who’s taken a stand for Human Rights.

Thank you, Billie. Though I am a resident of Michigan, I voted in support of the California Supreme Court’s ruling.
