Goldstar Review: Finn’s Girl

goldstar-review-finns-girl

Yeah for no subtitles! However I have accepted that I will need to get used to them when reviewing films in the genre de lesbian cinema.

When I first popped Finn’s Girl into the ole’ lap top I was reminded of If These Walls Could Talk. You know, the first one that wasn’t about lesbians. The scene where Cher was killed flashed in my mind. That was a horrible scene in a wonderfully moving movie. At this point I’m hoping Finn’s Girl will reproduce some of the same sentiments.

Finn’s Girl tells the tale of a widowed Finn Jefferies (Brooke Johnson), a doctor working at an abortion clinic which was initially run by her deceased wife. The even more emotional story is that of Finn’s Daughter’s rebellion. Her daughter, Zelly (Maya Ritter) was conceived with a donor before Finn’s wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and passed away. Observing Zelly’s preteen angst made me yearn for days long past while at the same time shuttering at the memories. The relationship between the two is very real. The conversations they have result in some of the best acting in the film.

One of my favorite moments in the film is when a cop with a french accent (Gilles Lemaire) says the phrase “Muff diver.” It was brilliant! This cop, by the way, looks like Benicio Del Toro had he gotten hit with more of the cute stick at birth.

What I liked about the movie is that it was believable. What I didn’t like is that I would have liked to have learned more about Finn and her wife’s relationship. However it was nice to be thrown into a good storyline and figure things out on my own. Add to that an interesting twist at the end and you have a movie with the purchase price!
