8AGAINST8 Reaches Goal on Day 3: It Doesn’t Have to Stop There!

I’m happy to announce that the 8 Against 8 Campaign slid past our goal last night just before midnight! Over 150 readers have donated www.8againt8.com and the donations keep on coming in. Never have I been part of such an amazing out pouring of funds to support what I believe comes down to the right to love.

The fight isn’t over. Our side is still behind financially despite Hollywoods late arrival to fight against Prop 8. Dorothy Snarker of Dorothy Surrenders and AfterEllen.com said, “Reaching our goal in three days is amazing and a testament to the generosity and passion of all of our readers,” said Snarker. “But just because we reached $8,000 doesn’t mean we should stop pushing for more. Polls show the ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ votes are almost dead-even. We can’t let intolerance win because we couldn’t afford to fight hatred head-on.” 8AGAINST8 website and donate what you can.

TLL is proud to be a part of a group of 8 lesbian blogs that have banned together to fight California’s Proposition 8. This November, Californians will be asked to vote on Proposition 8, a divisive ballot initiative that would take away the freedom to marry from loving and committed same-sex couples. We’ve joined the NO on 8 campaign because we believe every Californian deserves the freedom to marry the one they love. Prop. 8 would create a separate set of rules for same-sex couples, treating them differently under law. Regardless of how you feel about marriage, it is a right that belongs to all of us, without exception.

We know that times are tough right now, but every dollar counts. The right to marry has been given and taken away from us too many times. We all need to stand up and let the state of California know that we will all come together from every state in the union and from around the globe to fight for what we believe to be right in our hearts.

Please consider another perspective. Yes on Prop 8 does not deny you the right to enjoy “lesbiatopia,” nor does it deny you any rights as a domestic partnership… it’s just not marriage!

nameKats last blog post..Proposition 8 in Plain English

by Kat on October 20th, 2008 at 1:14 AM

Okay, so I blathered on against Kat’s nutty remark, which showed up over on Grace the Spot, too. So I won’t here. I’ll just say: Thank you, Kelly, for this.

If every LGBT person in California stepped up, this battle would be closer to fair. And if all of our friends and family stepped up with us, it would be over in a minute. But right now, too many people either mistakenly think Prop 8 is going to be defeated (’cause they saw the early, pre-TV ad carpet bombing polls, and tuned out), or they think someone else is going to step up.

WE ALL HAVE TO STEP UP IF WE WANT TO KEEP THIS HISTORIC PIECE OF JUSTICE FROM BEING SNATCHED OUT OF OUR HANDS.

Simple as that. We do nothing, we lose for sure. We all do something, we win for sure.

Thank you for helping all your readers do something. Donate! Vote! Spread the word!

Can I just add something about this Kat person and her ilk?

The reason why I even got the idea to start this thing in the first place was because I witnessed someone I know – namely an old friend – campaigning for Prop 8. It hurt. It made me mad. It lit a fire under my ass, and I had to do something about it.

So, Kat, I encourage you to keep talking. It just makes me want to work harder. It motivates me to raise even more money. So, thank you for being my muse. *Kisses!*

by Grace Chu on October 20th, 2008 at 1:32 PM

I’m pretty excited about the prospect of Prop 8 being rejected, and I’m sure it’s not possible without the efforts of people (and bloggers such as yourselves) reminding everyone that this is not a done deal, and that there are a lot of people out there who a) live in a tunnel and don’t see the rest of the world outside themselves, b) assume that everyone else will vote, so they don’t have to, or c) are simply clueless because they avoid politics like the plague.

Thank you so much for the time energy (what POSITIVE energy!!) you all have put towards your brilliant campaign. I love that groups of people become large groups of people and as long as we use them positively, our voices can and will be heard and acted upon.

You and all your readers rock.
