President Barack Obama

Barack Obama has single-handedly demonstrated that millions of Americans are moving beyond the racial boundaries that have divided our nation for more than 200 years. I know this because it took all types of Americans to achieve this. It took more than African-Americans to vote him in, and if that doesn’t say something about the hearts of our nation, particularly my generation, I don’t know what does. Even more importantly, he has lit a spark to rekindle hope & optimism in a whole world that is running short on both.

The internet has made us into a global society. The world reaction displays this, it’s not only about America, he’s provided hope to the earth.Hope that world war three ISN’T inevitable. Hope that we can tell all of our children that they can achieve their dreams and really mean it. But let’s not forget how he did it, and why we have chosen him as our leader. His background, his education, his focus, his good character. The disillusionment & disappointment of the failures we’ve been experiencing has become so ingrained in our culture that many have felt powerless for much too long. Gone are the days of being afraid of the government. I am weeping in joy not for the win of a black man, but an honest man who truly seems to represent the voice of the people. The name of his book is The Audacity of Hope and those words mean so much to me now. How audacious does one really have to be to keep from losing hope? Watching the celebrations taking place globally really communicated to me how much has been lost around the earth and I pause to wonder, what impact does the leader of this nation have on this world? What does it mean that multitudes of people from all nations are cheering and weeping, ecstatic that Obama is now our leader? Would they have done that had John Kerry won in 2004? I don’t think so. It almost feels magical. It’s almost as if he makes everyone believe that he can deliver the world from peril.

I think he’s got a ton of work to do, but is the absolute best man for the job- still, we need to act like we remember that this is still a man, not a savior, and we all have a personable responsibility to create excellence in our own character. It is important to understand the awesome task in front of him. He is looking at a huge deficit to work out of and historic challenges- two wars going on, and economic collapse all around us. He has built his campaign on honesty, character of strength, and tenacity. We will be smart to hold him and his administration to these standards, as it is not only him in charge but a Congress that echoed the cries of change. We will also be smart to take an active role in the restoration of our communities as well. Not only does Obama have the toughest job any president has faced, he also has the enormous great expectations from us, the public, which you could see on every face in the crowd during his speech.

We have had 8 years of a president who made really bad decisions and never accounted to or consulted us for any of them. I remember seeing footage of Bush golfing while saying, “every American has to do everything in their power to fight terrorism and increase homeland security” and I remember thinking, what? You are telling us this from a golf course? That man never felt like he should have had to come on television and reassure us of anything. We have had 8 years of being ignored so it’s going to feel like love to be respected as members of a nation again. I believe that watching a presidency under Obama will unfold quite differently from what we are used to. I believe that he will give us more access to understand why and how he makes decisions to act.

Now we have an opportunity to participate in the revolution of our country, just as many of us participated in his campaign. Poor John McCain, he never really had a chance. He was running not only against Obama, but George Bush and Sarah Palin, as well! There is no better way to slam the door on 8 years of Bush’s dictatorship than to elect the first African-American to replace him. The symbolism is powerful, the history profound. More than our political party changed last night. Something was stirred in us strongly. America finally grew up.

Personally speaking, I believe in character again. I believe in the quality of my heart and the quality of my actions. I once again feel as if what is good and righteous is what truly matters. Nelson Mandela summed up my feelings in this quote from a letter he has written to President Obama: “Your victory demonstrated that no person anywhere in the world should not dream of wanting to change the world for a better place.”

We should try to fight Proposition 8 which takes away rights already granted.
