You have the answer with in your statement “I believe in myself, and my family and friends–I believe in people who I KNOW will be there for me in hard times, and will always be by my side, rather than put my trust in an invisible being.
My life doesn’t have an “absolute” meaning, but it is what I make of it, and I can give myself success in this life by making the right choices.”
I mean no offense, but all you speak of in this is about what they do for you, what religions and therapy did or didn’t do for you. “You can give yourself success by making the right choices…” but success in and of itself is not success at all, but only an accomplishment.
Living our lives as a complete and whole human being means that we also give of our selves. We SHOULD strive for ourselves and have people around us that support us, but we SHOULD ALSO make sure that we are in turn helping others who need us, who look to us for support and encouragement.
It doesn’t have to be something like feeding the hungry, or taking in a homeless person, it can be as simple as helping kids learn to read at a local school, teaching someone housebound to blog, helping the local GLBT community center with youths who have troubles at home because they are GLBT. It can be as little as an hour a month or week. It should be something you enjoy and/or have a talent for so you don’t lose interest or become discouraged.
I think most of us are born to see outside ourselves to something bigger to the scheme of life, something that is noble and good, and it doesn’t have to be a “Goddess” or “God”. I think that we spend so much time getting beat down by others and beating down others that we start to lose sight of it because we reflect our own experiences into the something bigger.
Reaching out to lift and build up others I think lets us glimpse it from a fresh prospective.

Also.... why does everything have to have meaning? why can't it "just be" I think the goal here is to enjoy every conscious moment of your current life and not try to apply "meaning" to everything. Just live your life and enjoy the people around you. Go on Vacation and soak up the sun because it feels good. Fall in love, its been scientifically proven that your brain releases chemicals when your in love that make you clinically insane. Isn't that fun? we don't need meaning behind everything that happens. SHIT HAPPENS and we can't stop it or alter it.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('3943','I Have a Thought'); return false;">Reply</a> - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('3943','I Have a Thought','Also.... why does everything have to have meaning? why can\'t it \"just be\" I think the goal here is to enjoy every conscious moment of your current life and not try to apply \"meaning\" to everything.
Here's my two cents, I have a lot of opinion on this topic, I actually just wrote about it. Why do we need something, a being, a belief, a religion to make us feel complete? It's common. We have nothing to look forward to and nothing to make us happy so we put all of our happy eggs in the god and religion basket to give us some glimmering subconscious hope that there HAS TO BE SOMETHING BETTER and god or religion must be it. I attribute it to laziness.
I find it very hard to keep my big mouth shut when people wish me a merry christmas, tell me it's gods way, or even bless me when I sneeze. I know that they're trying to be polite, which is why I don't say anything but if people are so willing to ASSUME that everyone believes in god, why can't we just say..."oh, thank you but I don't carry the same belief" It's a sneeze! some micro particle tangled in your nose hairs causing an involuntary reaction to rid it's self of the foreign object. My heart doesn't skip a beat and I'm not going to drop dead of a sneeze! Just another religious freak anecdote to apply god to every aspect of life.
I say you try this. Every time you start to feel something is missing, think of all of the homeless people, battered wives and children, families losing their homes due to job loss, people who have just lost a loved one... Everything in your life is what you make it and if you're feeling like something is missing I suggest you find what ever it is and put it in place. Look at the less fortunate and have empathy but be thankful for all that you do have.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('3941','I Have a Thought'); return false;">Reply</a> - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('3941','I Have a Thought','Here\'s my two cents, I have a lot of opinion on this topic, I actually just wrote about it.
