When Iowa-ish eyes are smiling.

Today on NBC’s The Chris Matthew’s Show, Andrew Sullivan made a prediction regarding same sex marriage. I am almost certain (but can’t check myself as the episode is not yet available for embedding), that Mr. Sullivan, during the “Tell me something I don’t know” section of the show, indicated that though Vermont has been the focus of attention recently, Iowa may well be where the more immediate development occurs.
Iowa made the list of states that I predict will have marriage equality by 2012, but I failed to note how far along Iowa is. Iowa has a case, Varnum v. Brien, where the trial court ruled back in August 2007 that it is unconstitutional to deny same-sex couples the right to marry. Arguments at the Iowa Supreme Court were heard back in December, 2008.
The Decorah Newspapers, which I’m guessing know a whole heaping pile more about the Iowa Supreme Court than I do, write that the “Iowa Supreme Court is likely to hand down a decision int he [sic] historic Varnum v. Brien marriage case in the next few months.”
Vermont remains particulary newsworthy, of course, as it is the state that appears to be closest to legislating marriage equality. (Though Mr. Sullivan believes that though the Vermont Senate is veto-proof, the House is not.)
