I doubt very seriously that the OS crowd is in any way hindering the cause of LGBTQ rights. What's alienating the straight people is their own fears. As for the oppression olympics...OS-ers aren't so visible nor common as gays/lesbians, or they'd get dumped on just as often--I know of one who is being bullied at school, and am currently trying to help her defend herself.
The ceremony you mention was *not* a legally recognized deal, more of a family and friends occasion. It poses no threat to gays who want to get hitched, and might even serve as a helpful distraction. By the way, I don't know about the Bert Show, but if I wanted to know the truth I would go to the OS sites themselves and hear from the people who know it first-hand, rather than some outside commentator.
Does some of the stuff I read about squick me out? Yes, especially the use of gendered pronouns in English--if I wanted a he-him-his, I'd just get a man. But they aren't trying to make me talk like that, and I think this business of dismissing anything you don't understand as a bunch of crap, is out of line. If it bothers you, leave it alone and focus on something useful. Even the smartest of us can't understand everything all the time. It doesnt hurt me so what do I care?
Ridiculous behavior? I've seen gays, straights, you name it, all doing things that are pretty damn silly if you look at it right, and it's all a matter of who is in power, which ones are accepted. I'd rather live next door to a guy who screws his car--provided he parks it first--than a rapist, someone who molests kids or animals, or even someone who just sits around reviling people who do stuff that's unfamiliar or confusing to him or her.
I would have thought that the progressive sector would have moved beyond the need for a scapegoat. First they came for the Jews, etc.
I am sorry I didn't get to this earlier when it was fresh, but I didn't know about it then.<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('5248','Tess Eract'); return false;">Reply</a> - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('5248','Tess Eract','I doubt very seriously that the OS crowd is in any way hindering the cause of LGBTQ rights.
Well...I guess the Eiffel Tower is her wife...lol

If you look on the website at the end of my post, there are some FAQS answered by Erika Eiffel and a few videos on the subject as well.

Load of crap, if you ask me.

Hmm, why is La Tour Eiffel her "husband"?? As you can see, the word in French is feminine :-) So you would refer to the tour as "elle" (she in French).

It is a very bizarre story. My brother has Aspergers and for ages he was obsessed with a cartoon character but I have never heard of this. And what if La Tour Eiffel does not love her back?? Yes, it is bizarre. I live in Paris and maybe I can get myself a commitment ceremony to the yummy raspberry tarts or the bread...<div class="comment-remix-meta"><a href="#" class="replyto" onclick="replyto('4851','Kristen'); return false;">Reply</a> - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('4851','Kristen','Hmm, why is La Tour Eiffel her \"husband\"??
