Music to Soothe the Savage Breast…er…Beast

music-to-soothe-the-savage-breast-er-beast

So, I’m stuck on a desert island and I have to take just ONE album? Yeah, right. Okay, it’s taken me this long in the month to narrow it down and I still haven’t narrowed it down to just ONE. But I did narrow it down to ONE vocal and ONE instrumental, which I think is pretty good.

Most of the readers of this site will probably recognize my vocal selection, which is kd lang “Shadowlands”. There are many other singers I love, and many other kd albums that I love, but this one encompasses so many different ranges, moods and styles that I never get tired of listening to it-and sadly, trying to sing with it. At least, on a desert island, I couldn’t embarrass myself too badly!

My instrumental music selection is less well known. It’s by a brilliant musician named Chris Spheeris, who has many albums out, but this one is by far his best: Eros.

This music is amazing. It is lush, sensuous, melodic, haunting, and beautiful. Once you listen to it once, you will not be able to quit listening to it. I’ve had this CD for 8 years and I still listen to it probably once a week. This is the kind of music that can literally transport you away from an unpleasant situation to a beach, a little cafe in a foreign country, a lover’s paradise. I can’t praise this music and this artist too highly, and if you’ve never heard his music, give it a listen.

And while you’re on your desert island, kick back and enjoy the musical feast.

No it’s breast, not beast… “Music has charms to soothe a savage breast,” spoken by Almeria in Act I, Scene 1. (The word “breast” is often misquoted as “beast”.) The exact quote is “Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.”

@nameRipp von Shar – Sorry I left out the play, it’s from William Congreve’s The Mourning Bride.
