Fried Green Tomatoes 1991 Lesbian Film Movie Review 5 Stars

Fried Green Tomatoes 1991 (Movie) and Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café 1987 (Book)
Lesbia
n Movie, yes, no, maybso – Lesbianism was a theme in the novel (Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café), as the relationship between Idgie and R
uth was accepted by the entire town of Whistle Stop. Although it was not labeled a lesbian relationship, every resident
knew about Idgie and Ruth, accepted it, and loved them for who they were. This relationship was minimized in the film version of “Fried Green Tomatoes” when the events placed Ruth and Buddy Threadgoode together, and Idgie
was much younger than Ruth, suggesting that Ruth loved Idgie because she was Buddy’s sister. Many reviews of the film version critiqued what was viewed as a “glossing over” of this theme, although the film received an award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance against Defamation (GLAAD).
This movie will have you on a roller coaster ride, of laughing crying and taking deep breaths from shock. I watch
ed this film back in 1995, and I was hooked, every time I wanted to share a movie with someone this was the top of my list.
True Story
, I was living in New Hampshire, in college, and it was a movie night with some of my friends most of them had never seen the movie before so of course I was off to the Movie rental store to pick it up. On my way there, I have to drive under an over pass for rail road tracks. And as I drove under, “Splat” something hits my windshield. I didn’t take much notice as what seemed to be an apple dangled from my windshield wiper after doing their job of getting most of the gunk off so I could see. I pulled into the movie rental place and went inside and asked them to call the police, because if it was apples they were going to bust someone’s windshield. I rented my movie and then went out to my car to wait for the police. As I get to the car I decide to look and see what it was they threw….. At this point you can probably figure out what was tossed from the over pass…… GREEN TOMATOE….. Freaking weird…. Just the tomatoes factor would have been weird enough, but the fact that it was thrown from rail road tracks makes it even weirder! (If you have seen the movie, you know that one of the main things about whistle stop cafe is that the towns economy is based on the track
s that run there it, not to mention the accident that happens (I won’t give that away)
Another True story – About 3 years later, I am at Boston Pride, and as me and my friends are walking back to one of their houses, we have to go through what I was told is the Italian part of town. And as we are walking I see a woman in the distance and she is looking right at me. She is standing with 2 guys and another woman in the doorway of a restaurant. I think to myself who the heck is this, did I go to school with her, do I know her from back home, and is it someone I met…. The face of the (PS freaking gorgeous woman, tall, confident) was so familiar. As I get closer she is still looking at me, and I am thinking who the hell is this. By this time my pals are on the other side of the street. As I walk past her alone, she says “Hi”, and I say “Hey, how are you.” She says “Good”, and I walk past, quickly crossing the street to join my friends who are all staring at me like my hair was on fire. And at that precise moment I realize, that I had just walked past Mary Stuart Masterson. I kept my cool and acted like I had no clue, my friends on the other hand lost their minds. Needless to say, that was the talk of our group of friends for months.
I now have this movie on VHS, and DVD, and it is one of those movies that I could watch over and over and over again.
My Rating for this movie – Surprise, Surprise!!!! Is 5 stars.
The characters are strong, the references to the past present and future are refreshing, and the actors are impeccable in their delivery. If you haven’t seen this movie you are missing out, you should buy it rent it and watch it over and over and over again.
CHEERS!!!
