Ash spoke to each of the employee’s allowing those that wanted to go home, to leave. A store full of crying employees was not going to do anything for their sales. It was a slow day anyway. She sat at her desk and prepared for tomorrow, calling employees in that wanted to work, all the while she thought about Ed.

Ki’s arms were securely wrapped around Brie when her phone rang. She sprang from the bed quickly, immediately silencing the shrill ring. She answered without checking the caller id.

“Whassup?” Ki spoke groggily.

“Ki, it’s Ash. Have you seen Ed?” Ash’s voice was laced with worry. Having known each other for so long, she could tell by the inflection in her voice that something was wrong.

“Naw, I thought she was with you? What’s wrong?” She disentangled herself from Brie. She couldn’t stop herself from kissing her cheek and smoothing her hair. She moved towards the window hoping to preserve Brie’s slumbering state.

“Dae came in late, screaming and shit about Taylor.” Ash paused. “She’s dead. That girl of hers…” Ash’s sentence trailed off.

“Son. Of. A. Bitch.” Her words left her mouth one at a time. It wasn’t until Brie sat up in her bed that she realized she had been shouting. Brie sat up quickly, startled. Upon seeing her standing at the window, she looked irritated. Ki turned her back to her, wiping away a stray tear.

“It was an accident. Kinda. But anyway, Ed just walked out. I’m worried about her. You know she doesn’t handle death well.” Ki ran her hand through her dark hair. Yes, she remembered. The last death Ed dealt with almost landed her in the hospital. She had turned into a walking zombie.

After telling Brie what was going on, they spent the next fifteen minutes trying to figure out where Ed could be. They decided that if they didn’t hear from her in a couple of hours they would all go looking for her.

Ed was sweating. The sun was beating down on her. Her thick locs made it even hotter. She sat in the middle of one of the empty fields at Piedmont Park, reliving her first meeting with Taylor.

It was unseasonably warm for February. The park was crowded with people wanting to take advantage of the beautiful day. Ed was running through the park when she was hit by a stray softball, knocking her to her knees. A blonde angel ran over to check on her.

“Oooh, are you okay?” Ed opened her eyes to vibrant blue eyes. “I’m so sorry!”

Ed was too embarrassed to let the blue eyed angel know that she was in serious pain. When Taylor held her hand out, she reached out and took it, allowing the blonde to help her to her feet. She seemed sturdy and muscular. She looked as though she could handle whatever she encountered. It intrigued Ed, but she didn’t do anything about it.

She allowed Taylor to help her to her car. She was glad that her injured leg wasn’t the one she needed to drive with. She went home that day, soaked in some Epson salts, but she often thought of the concerned look in the blonde’s blue eyes. Had her leg felt better she probably would have kicked herself in the ass for leaving their next meeting to chance.

She was interviewing for a new manager at Latte Pride. That’s when she saw the warm blue eyes again. She was hesitant about hiring her because she knew she had a personal interest in her, but she couldn’t deny her experience and recommendations.

She was in a desperate position at the store. She had just taken the store over and was in over her head. She saw Taylor as a God send, so she hired her, even though her presence sent her libido into overdrive. She fought it on a daily basis, but one day she gave up the fight.

They were having an informal store outing. They were out at a lounge and everyone had been drinking, some more than others, so it wasn’t surprising to see people start to pair off. Even in Ed’s altered state of mind, she was still aware that she was the boss and needed to show some sense of decorum.

She took it upon herself to watch over the employees that seemed as though they were on the extreme end of inebriated. She watched Taylor especially. She seemed to have such positive energy. She was laughing with everyone. She made each individual feel special, like they really cared. She was magnetic. Everyone wanted to be in her space.

That night she looked after Taylor. When it was obvious Taylor didn’t need another drink, she talked her into letting her drive her home. Taylor leaned on her as they walked to her car.

When they made it to Taylor’s place, she begged her to stay, claiming to feel too bad to be left alone. They climbed in the bed together. Taylor wrapped her arms around her. She was struck by how secure her hold was. She held her as though she was the protector. It was firm and all encompassing. It was a new feeling for Ed. She was used to providing the comfort. Not the other way around.

It was that night that their relationship changed.

Lesbian Quotes

I don’t think of them as lesbian supervisors, I think of
them as county supervisors who happen to be lesbians.
A lesbian supervisor would have a very different job:
‘Hey you, cut those nails before you hurt somebody.’
    — Marga Gomez (on lesbians in local government)
