TLL Adult Review: Roulette

tll-approvedA huge thank you to Babeland for giving me the chance to review Roulette! The first time I watched Roulette, I didn’t really get to watch it, if you know what I mean. A friend and I popped it in as “background noise” for other activities. I’ve had partners who don’t want music or anything at all on during sexytime, and I just don’t understand that. Or they turn on actual movies. Actual movies are lame for sex. I’ll admit it openly here, my mind wanders and, especially if it’s a movie I’ve never seen before, I’ll start paying attention to the screen and stop paying attention to my partner. It’s worse if it’s a comedy. Anyway, I was reviewing a porno, so I’ll get back to that. My point was, Roulette makes some fantastic background noise for sex, and that was how I experienced it the first time.

Queer sex is as hard to define as it is to ignore.

vlcsnap-97474This is the tag line for the film. What’s great about Roulette is that it makes this statement, and then provides examples. It portrays a wide array of sexualities and gender identities. This whole movie is an exploration in what queer sex can be. It’s unapologetic and in your face, and all along the way, the music is kicking. It’s got something for everyone, from butch/femme strapon sex, to a strapon wearing butchy individual fucking hirself on the floor of a locker room, to a pub orgy (on a pool table!), to two gay men fucking on a roof (awesome!) and beyond. I happen to like gay male porn. It’s interesting. And it’s hot. Don’t judge me, I know some of you like it too.

It seems at every turn there’s a little something extra to push anyone’s buttons. The gay boys are on a roof, and could be seen. The butch person in the wrestler’s locker room is masturbating with a glass dildo stolen from the adjacent locker, belonging to a crush (I can only assume) and could get caught by that crush, or even the whole wrestling team at any moment. There’s a scene where a femme fucks a strap-on wearing butch using a Feeldoe. Let me say it again. The butch is wearing a strap-on while getting fucked at the same time. I thought I was the only person who liked the idea of wearing a strap-on while being fucked. It’s nice to know I’m not.

vlcsnap-99564The Gangbang/Orgy scene in the bar room deserves it’s own damn paragraph. Holy balls, people. The bartender is hot, the lovely little pixie headed girl in polka-dotted shoes and dress is hot, Syd Blakovich and Jiz Lee are hot (Syd and Jiz are both also on Crash Pad and other places too). It starts with a little billiards, and then the polka-dotted girl comes up and puts the moves on the bartender, and things start to heat up when Syd and Jiz join in. I am joyful about the safe sex in these scenes. Condoms on everything, gloves on hands. It’s hot. Safe sex is hot sex. And the black latex gloves don’t hurt a bit in helping the hotness along.

bring back art.

This is another tag line in the film. Roulette has managed to do just that. The scenes are at once hardcore and artistic. The actors aren’t mainstream, they’re diverse sexualities, gender identities, body types, etc. The only thing it lacks is racial diversity, but I’m not holding that against this film. This is definitely not your typical porn. It’s mixed up with random music video scenes that are not sex. And throughout, there is a hip soundtrack with a good beat to have sex to.

vlcsnap-3567635I read Babeland’s interview with Courtney Trouble, who made Roulette, and saw that she was endeavoring to create a porn film “that people would be inspired to show their friends — so much porn gets hidden under beds or tossed, and I wanted to make something that people could hold on to, or throw a porn-viewing party with.” I’ve got to say she’s succeeded on this mark. I have plans to buy another copy of Roulette for my close friend, simply because it’s such a positive, realistic look at queer sexualities… and also because it’s easy to pop in for background noise for sex, and I gotta share the love. Check out some of the soundtrack at NoFauxxx, and I highly recommend watching the trailer, and then head over to Babeland to pick up a copy for yourself! And be sure to tell a friend about it.
