Gold Star Review: I Can’t Think Straight
One of the sponsors of this years Lezzy Awards was Enlightenment Productions. They are the production company behind two great movies; I Can’t Think Straight and World Unseen. This past weekend I sat down with a banana and I Can’t Think Straight. Take a look at the films trailer below.
The film stars Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth. Lisa has a crazy resemblance to and the characteristics of Angelina Jolie which is a plus for most lesbians. The first thing that I found interesting about this film was that is was a wonderful melting pot of ethnicities and accents. There was a bit of everything emotionally and wonderful spots of humor contributed by the housekeeper played by Nina Wadia.
The story is about Tala, a London-based Palestinian, who is preparing for her elaborate Middle Eastern wedding when she meets Leyla, a young British Indian woman who is dating her best friend.
Spirited Christian Tala and shy Muslim Leyla could not be more different from each other, but the attraction is immediate and goes deeper than friendship. But Tala is not ready to accept the implications of the choice her heart has made for her and escapes back to Jordan, while Leyla tries to move on with her new-found life, to the shock of her tradition-loving parents.
As Tala’s wedding day approaches, simmering tensions come to boiling point and the pressure mounts for Tala to be true to herself.
Moving between the vast enclaves of Middle Eastern high society and the stunning backdrop of London’s West End, I Can’t Think Straight explores the clashes between East and West, love and marriage, conventions and individuality, creating a humorous and tender story of unexpected love and unusual freedoms.
I wanted a little more of a tease at the beginning of the movie. I realize the women had to jump right into things because there was a larger story to tell, but I’m a sucker for “Moonlighting” and “Dawson’s Creek” type love affairs.
The acting wasn’t too bad and I sat through the entire movie happily. It’s a love story for the most part. I didn’t feel like politics got in the way as I had assumed they would from reading about the film before seeing it. I’m currently waiting patiently to see Lisa Ray in another movie.
