March 2008: Grumpy Granny

Grumpy Granny

The picture was taken September 2007, in the town of Trinidad de Arre, just outside of Pamplona, Spain, by a German woman that I had the pleasure of walking with.  We had spent the night in the pilgrim’s quarters of the church that surrounds that little courtyard that I’m standing in.

Her Bio

I love getting older! I am happier, free-er, and more in love than I have ever been in my life. I want to learn more, explore more, travel more, experience more as time goes by. I really feel like I am getting younger in a lot of ways, and if I were going to be used as an example for anything, I would want it to be for not only aging “gracefully” but also enthusiastically!

The Interview

When did you come out?

I came out to myself around 16 to 20 years ago. For a while, I identified as bi, because it was just easier thinking that maybe men could still be a part of my personal life. Then I began to realize my strongest relationships throughout my entire life had been with women, and I knew that if I ever had another “significant” relationship, it would be with a woman, no question. When I left my 2nd husband because of his drinking, I had no thoughts of getting into a relationship at all, but again, knew in my heart that IF I did, it would be a lesbian relationship, because I was no longer willing to even attempt to be something I wasn’t. When I met my sweetie, I knew the Universe had heard me and sent me exactly what I both wanted and needed.

What made you want to become a TLL author?

I really enjoyed reading the site from day 1, but as I read some of the bios, I realized that there were very few women even over 30! I wanted to offer the perspective of someone not only older but with a little more experience in life. Although I haven’t been out all that long, I’ve done a lot of things in my years, dealt with a lot of situations, etc. I hope I can give a unique view of some of the questions/topics that get posed here.
Debt-free, working at a job that challenges me, traveling around the US and other parts of the world with my honey, and watching my grandsons become good men.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

Debt-free, working at a job that challenges me, traveling around the US and other parts of the world with my honey, and watching my grandsons become good men.

Who do you most admire and why?

I admire people who choose to meet adversity head on and don’t let uncontrollable circumstances in their lives get them down. My wife is one such. She suffered a horrible accident in the military, and was told she probably would not be walking in 10 years. That was nearly 17 years ago, and she is determined to stay on her feet, literally and figuratively. My admiration for her is boundless. I admire people who don’t whine, who get on with it, who do the things that need to be done without a lot of fanfare and hoo-ha.

If you could live anywhere where would it be?

Right where I’m living now, but I wouldn’t mind having a 2nd home or a shared place pretty much anywhere in the UK.

Your idea of the perfect woman would be?

My wife, no question. She’s smart, beautiful, handy, willing to try new things–be it a new recipe or idea, and she’s the most honest and open person I’ve ever known.

Tell us a bit about your personal blog

I actually have 2 personal blogs:
Title: CO-GrumpyGranny and CronesCorner

  • and

  • Content description: Grumpy Granny is the place where I talk about every day life and my “grumps”. Right now, on CronesCorner, I am detailing a month-long trip to Spain I took last September, where I walked 200 miles on El Camino Santiago. It’s also a place where I write more about spiritual things. Obviously, it’s taking me longer to write it than it did to walk it! I may combine the two at some point.

Other than TLL what are your favorite lesbian blogs?

    Recovering Straight Girl
    Tina-cious
    Adrenaline’s Shadow
    QWOC

Things people probably wouldn’t guess about you.

    1. That I have 2 grandkids.
    2. That I have tattoos.
    3. That I would prefer not to have pets.
    4. That I cry at sappy commercials.
    5. That I could walk 200 miles.

    What gives you inspiration?

Nature, beautiful music, words written from the heart, driving, washing dishes, walking. I say the latter 3 because activities like that free the creative part of my mind to wander off on its own and make up cool stuff for me to do or to write about.

What is your view on the legalization of gay marriage?

While I personally feel that I could not be MORE married to my wife, I also feel strongly that the gender of two people should not matter ONE BIT when it comes to joining lives, loves, and hearts in CIVIL marriage. Requirements of religion should be completely out of the picture when it comes to equality under the law. Since the Constitution does not speak to gender on pretty much any issue, then it should be a moot point.

What would your advice be to a young girl just discovering she may be gay?

Go with your heart and your gut, but also use common sense. If you live in an area where you know you could get hurt by speaking out, try to find an online community to ask your questions. If there is someone (adult) that you feel you can really trust, try to talk to them. Above all, do NOT think there is anything wrong with you. Love is never wrong, but it is also okay to protect yourself. It is also normal to find that your feelings may “flow” from one gender to another, one person to another. That’s what being young is all about! Don’t beat yourself up for your feelings, just try to figure out what makes you feel the best, and then you’ll know which direction to go in.
