I was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. I’m a Recovering Catholic. I graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in English in 1981. Besides Des Moines and South Bend, I’ve lived in France, DC, Chicago, and Northampton, Massachusetts where I studied at Smith College for a Masters in Theatre. At present I write, eat, sleep, and socialize. I’m fortunate to have wonderful, supportive, loving family and friends.

The Interview

Are you out? As Melissa said, “Yes, I Am

If so please tell us a bit about your coming out process. How old were you, who did you first come out to, what made you decide to come out? I was in my mid to late 20s when I first came out. I lived in Chicago at the time. I first came out to my journal because I was terrified to tell anyone. Then I came out to a few friends and to my mom. I decided to come out because I was tired of living a lie.

What made you interested in writing for TLL? I want my voice to be heard and to share my thoughts and experiences with as many people as possible and vice versa. I myself am also a Gold Star Dyke and I like TLL’s philosophy: Our Stories Told

Where do you see yourself in ten years? On Broadway enjoying a Tony-winning performance of Fighter Writer: The Musical

Who do you most admire and why? I admire many people, but I’d like to single out Ellen and Rosie for their courage, honesty, humor, and successes.

If you could live anywhere where would it be? New York City and Italy

Your idea of the perfect woman would be? Tougher than me. Prettier than me. Saner than me. Artsier than me. Fun like me.

Tell us a bit about your personal blog.
Title: The Fighter Writer
URL: http://julesjoyce.blogspot.com/
Description: I write about writing, living, laughing, bitching, and sleeping; and about being a lesbian bipolar breast cancer survivor who is both silly and serious, idealistic and cynical, superficial and sincere. I also review cultural stuff; quote famous folks; and photograph fun things.

Name some things people probably wouldn’t guess about you. I flunked Calculus in college at Notre Dame. I dropped out of grad school at Smith. I have a colorful sun-moon mosaic tattoo on my mastectomy scar.

Describe yourself in one word. Humorless. Just kidding!

What is your favorite break up song? Alone Again (Unnaturally)

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be? I would have more energy.

What or who gives you inspiration? My dear sister, Jill

Do you believe in love at first site? Maybe (How’s that for a wishy-washy answer? ;-)

What is your view on the legalization of gay marriage? I want one!

What would your advice be to a young girl just discovering she may be a lesbian? Love yourself. Find an excellent support system and a good gay-straight alliance. Get a cool girlfriend.

Lesbian Quotes

“Women who love women are Lesbians. Men, because they can only think of women in sexual terms, define Lesbian as sex between women.” — Rita Mae Brown
